A Dictionary of Contemporary Arabic (In Volumes)

The Dictionary includes three volumes:
- Volume I is appropriate for elementary school level. It contains approximately 8000 words.
- Volume II is appropriate for secondary and high school. It contains approximately 10000 words that extend the vocabulary in Volume I.
- Volume III is appropriate for higher education and public cultural life. It contains approximately 12000 words that extend the vocabulary in Volume I or II.
- The dictionary can be compiled on the basis of roots, following the tradition in most Arabic dictionaries. It can also be structured according to word forms. The matter shall be discussed before making the appropriate decision.
- It is suggested that three experts in Arabic Language and Literature participate in authoring each volume, provided that the collective project is reviewed by one supervisor appointed by the Academy.
- In consultation with the general supervisor, the Academy selects a number of advisers if necessary.
- The project is to be completed within three years with the allocation of a special budget.
- The criteria for words selection in all three volumes are set by the participating authors and the general supervisor. Vocabulary will be selected from contemporary texts, which mostly were written in our area, provided that they are comprehensive and diverse.
